In the first in-person meeting in two months, the Crossville City Council approved, in title only, the first reading of the 2020-21 budget and tax rate. The $17.7 million General Fund is $2.3 million less than the current year. Local officials are bracing for a drop in sales tax revenue in the coming months and are eyeing a five-cent property tax increase. Council approved the first reading of the tax rate at 64.05 cents. If approved on third reading, the increase would impact property owners by $12.50 per $100,000. Council will meeting in regular session for June next Tuesday. It is expected that council will hold a public hearing on the budget and vote on second reading at that time.
