All-American Vol and former Tennessee head football coach Johnny majors has passed away at the age of 85. Majors began playing for the University Of Tennessee in 1953 and was named SEC Player of the Year in 1955 and 1956. He was also a runner up for the Heisman Trophy in 1956. Major was UT’s head football coach from 1977 to 1992. At Tennessee, Majors won three SEC championships in 1985, 1989, and 1990. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1987. Majors passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning at his home in Knoxville, Tennessee. A memorial service at St. John’s Cathedral will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requested contributions to the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra or the charity of your choice.
