Local Business Owner Urges Crossville City Council To Wait On Tax Increase

In a public hearing on the proposed city property tax rate, Daren Stryker, representing the Chestnut Hill Winery and United Country Town and Country Realty, urged the Crossville City Council to hold off on implementing a five-cent tax hike. Stryker called the move unfair given the economic hit most businesses and residents have taken during the COVID-19 pandemic and suggested that council dip into a $12 million rainy day fund to cover shortfalls. City Manager Greg Wood noted that even with $5.5 million cut from the budget, the tax increase is to cover an employee pay increase earlier this year following a wage study that revealed most employees were paid up to 61 percent below market values. Wood added that five cents would add $2 per month per $100,000. Council later approved the 2nd reading of the budget and tax rate in title only, but changes can still be made prior to the final reading. It is expected that council will hold a special call for further discussion and final approval.
