Multiple agencies including the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office are searching for a possible downed plane near the Rockwood Airport. According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 7:52 am (CST) Tuesday, May 25, 2021. First Responders were alerted that a single engine plane may have crashed in that area. Officials have set up a Command Center at the Rockwood Airport and crews are narrowing their search to near the Rockwood Airport and Old Highway 28. Search planes have also been flying over a large portion of the Plateau including Linary, Fairfield Glade and Clarkrange. On his Facebook page, 9th Judicial District Attorney Russell Johnson posted that Roane County 911 received a report this morning that a small plane possibly crashed in the Mt. Roosevelt area. The plane evidently took off from the Rockwood Airport. Supposedly someone on the ground was in cell phone contact with the pilot when communication was lost and the person on the ground was unable to reconnect with the pilot.
