Time is running out for more than 1,400 people thrown in jail illegally as minors in Rutherford County to claim part of an $11 million class-action settlement. Reportedly, less than 200 have filed claims. The lawsuit alleges that the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center locked up children for misdemeanor charges. Tennessee law prohibits pretrial incarceration of children unless they are charged with a violent felony, a weapons offense, or a probation violation. It is estimated that Approved Claims by members of the Arrest Class may receive approximately $1000 per valid Arrest claim and that Approved Claims by members of the Detention Class may receive approximately $4800 per valid Detention claim timely submitted. The deadline to file a claim is October 29, 2021. More information is available at www.rutherfordjuvenilesettlement.com.
