The Great Smoky Mountains National Park received help from the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) and the Tennessee Army National Guard (TANG) to help a stranded hiker Tuesday, WVLT reports. Andrew Burtzloff, age 28, of San Diego, called for help a little after 8am Tuesday when he became lost while hiking along the Appalachian Trail. Officials were able to use cell phone data to pinpoint his location and a helicopter spotted him about 10am. The helicopter could not land in the wooded area and two medics had to be lowered to retrieve Mr. Burtzloff. The hiker had symptoms of hypothermia and was transported to UT Medical Center for treatment.
