The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention says 6 people have gotten sick and one person has died from Salmonella in Tennessee after coming into contact with backyard poultry.
In Early June, a total of 219 people across 38 states were infected with one of the outbreak strains. Illnesses started on dates ranging from February 15, 2022, to May 19, 2022. Sick people range in age from less than 1 to 89 years, with a median age of 29 years, and 56 (26%) are young children under 5 years. At least 27 have been hospitalized with one death reported in Tennessee.
Most people recover from Salmonella without treatment, however, if you suspect you have been infected you should seek medical help.
The CDC, state and local officials strongly urge those with backyard poultry to take measures to keep both themselves and their birds healthy. You can learn more at cdc.gov.
