The Associated Press reports that Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton told the news outlet that he has introduced a bill to consider the idea of not accepting almost $1.8 billion in K-12 federal education money. Under Sexton’s plan, Tennessee could use state tax dollars to replace federal education funds. The Associated Press says federal education money is seen as a key tool to supporting schools in low-income areas and special education. Speaker Sexton reportedly acknowledged to the AP that no state has ever been able to accomplished not taking federal education funds before.
