This past weekend the Tennessee Volunteers had both Men’s and Women’s basketball had games this Saturday and Sunday and the Lady Vols Softball program was in Clearwater, Florida for the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
Saturday the #10 Tennessee Volunteers basketball team was looking to bounce back against the Missouri Tigers after losing to Vanderbilt off of a last second three pointer. Tennessee was down by as much as 17 points in the second half against the Tigers Saturday and made a comeback to take the lead. Tennessee was ahead 85-83 with 4 seconds to go in the game and with a desperation heave from almost the half court line Tennessee was stunned again after Mizzou nailed the shot. The Tigers defeated the Volunteers with a final score of 86-65. Tennessee loses it’s second straight game and now has a record of 19-6 with a record of 8-4 in the SEC. Next up for Tennessee is a big mid week battle as they take on #1 Alabama on Wednesday. The game can be heard on 102.5 WOW Country.
A 28-point third quarter effort propelled the Lady Vols to an 86-59 victory over Vanderbilt in UT’s Play4Kay game at Thompson-Boling Arena on Sunday afternoon. Senior Rickea Jackson led Tennessee (18-9, 10-2 SEC) in scoring with 21 points on the day, while senior Jordan Horston narrowly missed a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds. Junior Tess Darby also had a productive outing with 14 points, and graduate Jordan Walker dished out a game-high eight assists and logged an eye-popping +40 plus/minus effort. Vanderbilt (11-15, 2-10 SEC) was led by Marnelle Garraud who tallied 16 points. Sacha Washington and Ciaja Harbison were also in double figures with 12 and 11, respectively. The Lady Vols will travel to Arkansas for a 6 p.m. matchup on Thursday that will be broadcast on MIX 99.3.
The 12th ranked Lady Vols Softball team traveled to Clearwater, Florida to take part in the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Tennessee Ladies had the bats going after defeating Howard with a final score of 21-1. The Lady Vols then went on to defeat the Illinois Fighting Illini with a score of 9-2. Then on Sunday #12 Tennessee was able to upset #8 Northwestern shutting out the Wildcats with a final of 6-0. The Lady Vols start the season 3-0 and will travel to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for their next tournament. They will start the tournament off by playing Sacramento State on Thursday, February 16th.
