It was an action packed weekend for UT sports as both Men’s & Women’s Basketball, Baseball, and Softball was in action as well as a record breaking weekend for the Track & Field Team.
The Tennessee baseball team started the action packed weekend playing Friday Saturday & Sunday. However it wasn’t how the #2 team in the nation wanted to start it. Tennessee fell in their season opener to Arizona Friday night with a final score of 3-1. Saturday #2 Tennessee was ahead of Grand Canon University 3-1 but ended up losing that game as well with a final score of 4-3. Tennessee’s luck turned around on Sunday as the Vols picked up their first win of the season defeating UC San Diego 7-0. Up next, Tennessee returns to Rocky Top and will play its home opener against Alabama A&M on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are still available in very limited quantities on AllVols.com.
The Softball team had a successful weekend in Mexico. It started Thursday as #8 Tennessee defeated Sacramento State Thursday 11-0. The shut outs continued into Friday as the ladies defeated North Dakota State 8-0. Saturday the Lady Vols had a double-header and split the day with a win and a loss. The loss came against Fullerton with a final score of 4-5 and the Lady Vols came back to defeat Liberty 5-1. #8 Tennessee improves to 6-1 on the season and will have another double-header on Friday as they take on Michigan State and South Florida.
The Tennessee basketball team was heading into Rupp Arena in Lexington Saturday after knocking off #1 Alabama. However Kentucky continues to give Tennessee the blues. #10 Tennessee was defeated by Kentucky for a second time this season. The Wildcats upset the Vols with a final of 66-54. Tennessee is back in action on Tuesday as they travel to College Station to take on the Texas A&M Aggies a rematch of last year’s SEC Championship. The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 PM
The Lady Vols basketball took an 83-76 victory over a scrappy Auburn squad on Sunday in front of a crowd of 9,039 in Thompson-Boling Arena. The win is UT’s 20th of the season, marking the program’s 46th 20-win campaign. Head coach Kellie Harper carded her 10th 20-win campaign, including three in four seasons on Rocky with the 2020-21 total of victories limited by canceled contests due to COVID-19. Prior to the game, Tennessee recognized seven Lady Vols in a Senior Day ceremony. Rickea Jackson, Jordan Horston, Tamari Key, Jessie Rennie, Jasmine Powell, Jordan Walker and Jasmine Franklin were all recognized at half court for their contributions during their Big Orange careers. The Lady Vols will play their final regular-season home game of the season on Thursday, hosting South Carolina in a 6 p.m. matchup that will be broadcast on ESPN.
Lastly it was a record breaking weekend for the Vols Track & Field Team. Jasmine Fehr set a School Record in the Women’s Indoor 5K with a time of 15:38.59. Chandler Hayden set an Arkansas Qualifier Meet Record in the Women’s Weight Throw at 22.51 Meters. Finally the Men’s Distance Medley Relay team set a Tennessee record at the Alex Wilson Invitational. The DMR time was 9:22.65 which breaks a school record. The runners involved in the four man group were Canaan Anderson, Rasheeme Griffith, Joe Hoots, and Yaseen Abdalla.
