9 Confirmed Dead In McNairy County, Numerous Tornado Warnings Issued In Tennessee Friday Night And Saturday Morning

Strong storms across Tennessee on Friday night and early Saturday morning caused widespread damage.  The National Weather service said it will probably take days to survey the destruction in the hardest hit areas that was likely caused by tornadoes.

In McNairy County, Adamsville Police confirm at least 9 people died as a result of Friday’s storms which also caused catastrophic property damage.

At least two people in Rutherford County in Middle Tennessee were hospitalized after powerful winds caused their home to collapse.  They sustained minor injuries.  At least 10 homes were destroyed in Rutherford County and 30 more structures damaged.

In Covington, Tennessee and surrounding areas of Tipton County there was severe damage and at least five people had serious injuries. At one point Friday night officials issued an alert to stay out of the city of Covington because debris had made the main road impassable.

Strong winds in Marshall County derailed a trail early Saturday.  Five train cars were overturned.  No injuries were reported.

Straight-line winds in White County brought down trees, utility poles and power lines.  There were no immediate reports of injuries.

In the Sunbright and Deer Lodge Communities of Morgan County, severe storms brought down trees and power lines.  The damage was described as extensive with minor injuries.  The roof was partially blown off the Sunbright City Hall building.

Numerous tornado warnings were issued across the state and the National Weather Service said potential tornadoes touched down in Rutherford, Wayne, Lewis, Marshall, Cannon and Macon Counties in West and Middle Tennessee.  As personnel survey the damage across the Volunteer State other counties are likely to be added to the list.
