Sixty percent of Tennessee’s 3rd graders are not ready for the 4th grade according to the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program test. Forty percent scored proficient in English Language Arts – a 4.3 percentage point increase from the previous year. Before the pandemic, only one-third of third graders in Tennessee had met expectations on the TCAP in English Language Arts. Students who fell short will be given several options to be promoted to the 4th grade, including certain exemptions, retaking the TCAP, free summer camp and/or tutoring in the upcoming school year.
