A large object that landed on a vehicle at Rhea County High School was first thought to have fallen off an airplane. Rhea County Sheriff’s Department Deputies assigned to Rhea County High School were notified of property damage to a 2014 Ford Escape in the School’s parking lot Thursday morning (8/24/23). Upon investigating, Deputies found damage to the rear hatch area of the vehicle.  It appeared that a large, metal snatch block and shackle had fallen from an aircraft and struck the parked SUV. There were no injuries to anyone on campus and no other property damaged. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was notified of the incident.  A short while later, the Rhea County Sheriff’s Department updated that they had been contacted by a local tree service after seeing the story on social media. It turns out, the tree service was working nearby and due to the pressure applied to a cable, it broke, and the piece of equipment flew through the air and landed on the car. The FAA has been updated, and the business has taken responsibility for the damage. (Photo courtesy Rhea County Sheriff’s Department)
