Crossville native and award winning radio host, James “Moby” Carney, passed away Wednesday morning (9/20/2023) after a battle with stage 4 cancer. He was 69.
Moby began his radio career at age 15 at 1490 WCSV in Crossville, Tennessee. The station is now owned by Peg Broadcasting, LLC. As he honed his craft, Moby also inspired other young people to join the profession, not only in Crossville and Nashville but across the nation as his talents took him to such cities as Tampa, Dallas, Houston and Atlanta.
Moby’s show would eventually go into syndication and for a time in the late 1990’s he could be heard back in his hometown of Crossville on 102.5 WOW Country.
Moby Carney earned membership in the Country Radio Hall of Fame, Georgia Radio Hall of Fame, and Texas Radio Hall of Fame. He was also a five-time winner of Billboard’s “Major Market Country Morning Show of the Year”.
He retired in 2016.
