The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is issuing a warning to all residents regarding a recent scam targeting individuals within the community. On Tuesday morning (12/26/2023), the Sheriff’s Office had received numerous reports regarding a fraudulent scheme in which a caller, claiming to be “Lt. James Perry of the Sheriff’s Office,” contacted individuals and falsely informed them of a civil suit supposedly involving them. The scammer is using the number 931-240-0332 but could also be using other numbers.
This individual is not associated with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office or any legitimate law enforcement agency. All residents are urged to exercise caution and vigilance in response to such calls.
Law enforcement agencies and legitimate government entities will never request personal information or payment over the phone in relation to civil suits or legal matters. If you receive such a call please do not provide any personal information or engage with the caller. Just hang up. And be sure to share this warning with family, friends and neighbors.
