Thousands of Tennesseans spent the holidays hungry due to months-long delays in getting their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits. Now those same families face a cold winter without enough food to put on the table. The Tennessee Department of Human Services blames the issue on the new Eligibility Benefits Management System that launched last summer. Tennesseelookout.com also reports that DHS has been experiencing a staff shortage. DHS says the computer and staff issues have caused a “temporary increase” in SNAP processing times. However, there are numerous reports of families who have been waiting 3 to 4 months to get help. And no one seems to know when these issues will get resolved. According to the USDA, SNAP benefits are supposed to be processed within 30 days.
