Former Crossville Fire Chief and current Crossville City Councilman Mike Turner proclaimed January as Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month. According to research, firefighters have a greater chance of being diagnosed with or dying from cancer than the general population. Chemical exposure as well as toxic work environments that include smoke, soot and other carcinogens contribute to increased risks for cancer.
