TVA Sets Preliminary Record Peak Demand Wednesday Morning

Jan 17, 2024 | 10:42 AM

TVA has ended its request for voluntary load reduction. If you were participating, you may resume normal activities at this time – including resetting your thermostat to a more appropriate level

The Tennessee Valley Authority reports the extreme cold temperatures Wednesday morning (1/17/2024) resulted in a preliminary record peak power demand on the grid.  At 8am Wednesday, the Valley set a preliminary all-time, record peak of approximately 34,500 megawatts at 4 degrees. The previous TVA all-time record was 33,482 megawatts in August of 2007.  TVA says it is grateful to their employees, as well as local power company partners, who are working to keep everyone safe and warm. TVA also greatly appreciates the energy conservation efforts across the region.

Volunteer Energy Cooperative released a statement confirming outages in its service area on Wednesday, however the power stayed on for most customers.
