According to To a News Article from WVLT, The State of Tennessee and Commonwealth of Virginia are coming after the NCAA in a different type of court than college athletes might be familiar with: the federal kind.
The suit was filed Wednesday, and WVLT News has a copy. It revolves around the NCAA’s ban on Name, Image and Likeness (NIL)-based recruiting. Under the NCAA’s current rules, NIL collectives and people associated with them aren’t allowed to even meet with prospective student athletes before they agree to attend a certain school.
The states are claiming that the NCAA’s recruiting rule violates anti-trust laws, because student athletes need to be able to freely participate in the market of college sports. In order to make an informed decision on where to attend, the suit claims, students need to know what kind of NIL opportunities are available to them.
