This year is the 80th anniversary of the Allied invasion of the beaches in Normandy, France during World War II. It is also the first year the monumental event will be formally observed in the Volunteer State.
In March, Governor Bill Lee signed into law a bill designating June 6 of each year to be observed as “D-Day Remembrance Day in Tennessee”, to honor and remember the brave men and women who fought valiantly and worked tirelessly to achieve the greatest amphibious invasion in history, which led to the liberation of Europe from tyranny.”
House Democratic Caucus Chair, Representative John Ray Clemmons, of Nashville, sponsored the bill with Representative Sam Whitson, of Franklin, to not only honor and remember the great sacrifice made by the brave soldiers, sailors, and airmen on June 6, 1944, but also to spread awareness to younger generations about the significance of D-Day and to give thanks for the freedom that those who served gave so much to provide.
