The TBI is investigating the circumstances of Friday morning’s shooting involving a deputy of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.
According to a press release from Monroe County Sheriff Tommy Jones, on Friday, August 2, 2024 at approximately 8:22 am, 49-year-old David Resmondo Resmondo pulled into the Monroe County Justice Center armed with a Ruger mini 14 .223 caliber rifle and fired several rounds into the building. Mr. Resmondo reportedly proceeded to the entrance of the Justice Center and fired another round through the glass door. At this time, deputies observed Mr. Resmondo entering the building armed with the rifle. Deputies cleared the lobby and a training room area attached to the lobby before Mr. Resmondo had the opportunity to enter the building. At this time, a deputy ordered Mr. Resmondo to drop the rifle. Mr. Resmondo allegedly refused to comply with the order, resulting in the deputy shooting the shooter and neutralizing the threat. Medical aid was rendered to Mr. Resmondo by deputies until Emergency Medical Services arrived and took over. Mr. Resmondo was transported to a local hospital were he was later pronounced deceased.
The TBI said no one else was injured in the incident.
It is routine for a District Attorney to request a TBI investigation in an officer-involved shooting.
The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether an officer’s actions were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.
