Cumberland County Mayor Allen Foster has given an update on the vacant 7th District BOE seat due to the resignation of Rebecca Hamby, effective September 1, 2024.
Foster said the County Commission was given formal notice of vacancy from the County Clerk as was the Mayor’s office.
This vacancy will be filled in the November 5th election.
Mayor Foster said independent candidate petitions will be issued starting September 3rd at the Election Commission Office on Northside Lane in Crossville.
September 11th at noon will be the qualifying deadline, but anyone interested should reach out to the Election Commission for more details. Proof of High School Diploma or GED is required.
The Republican and Democratic Parties have the option to caucus for candidates.
TCA (state law) is different for BOE appointments than it is for other offices, so the Commission still had the discretion and authority to appoint someone in September for about a month and a half in office.
A motion was made and approved unanimously that the vacant 7th District BOE seat be filled at the November election per TCA guidelines, with no additional action by the County Commission.
