The Varsity Wrestling team for Stone Memorial High School was in action at the annual Knox Catholic Invitational Tournament. SMHS joined some of the best teams in the state who make up this Tournament with the likes of Father Ryan High School, Bradley Central High School, Lakeway Christian Academy, Pigeon Forge High School, and Gibbs High School.
Three of the eight wrestlers SMHS took were able to place and receive medals in the very tough tournament. with Cole Lester finishing 4th, Aubrey Thompson and Zion Bringhurst
Cole Lester wrestled in the 113 lbs. weight class and picked up a victory in the Quarter Finals against Aston Devey of William Blount High School to send him to the Semi Finals. Lester however fell in the Semi-Finals to Ezra Finstad of Gibbs High School in Overtime 8-6. Cole defeated Daniel Marchetti of Father Ryan High School to send him to the medal match for 3rd & 4th and would ultimately finish 4th after falling to Miguel Rincon of Bradley Central by Pin.
Aubrey Thompson found himself in the Finals of the 138 lbs. weight class after picking up victories by pin over Josiah Kelly of Pigeon Forge, Riley Napier of Heritage High School, and Cameron Elliot of Notre Dame High School. Thompson wrestled for the Championship against Caleb Gumlick of Lakeway Christian Academy but fell by pin and finish 2nd.
Zion Bringhurst, a transfer student from Utah, wrestled in his first individual tournament for Stone Memorial and made it to the finals in the 145 lbs. weight class. Zion defeated Fransico Ordonez of Gibbs and Cole Thurston of Bearden High School to advance to the finals. After a tough match against Luke Belcher of Bradley Central Zion Bringhurst would finish 2nd.
SMHS Wrestling will have a busy schedule this week as the team travels to Rhea County Thursday for Team Duels against Rhea County High School and Soddy Daisy High School. Then on Saturday SMHS hosts the I-40 Clash! Saturday the Boys Varsity team will compete in teams duels in the main gym while the Girls Team competes in a individual tournament in the Auxiliary gym next door. Wrestling starts early Saturday with weigh-ins at 8 and the wrestling to begin in both gyms shortly after.
