Backhoe Driver Dies In White County Crash

A backhoe driver was killed Wednesday (6/28/23) in a crash on Highway 70 South in White County.  It happened shortly before 9am near the intersection of State Route 111. According to the THP’s preliminary report, 41-year-old Sumor L. George was driving a 2020 Ford tractor when he impacted a John Deere backhoe that was traveling in the same direction.  Both vehicles left the road. The tractor caught fire and the backhoe overturned. The driver of the backhoe, 63-year-old William D. Lewis, died at the scene.  Mr. George was injured but the THP did not say to what extent.  Charges were listed as pending the outcome of the accident investigation.
