The Smith County Rescue Squad is emphasizing the use of life jackets after they were called out twice for water rescues at Betty’s Island on Saturday. The first call for help came around 2pm and involved 3 kayakers who overturned in turbulent waters. Two were wearing life jackets but the one who was not had to be transported for a medical evaluation. Shortly after 7pm the Smith County Rescue Squad was dispatched again to Betty’s Island for overturned kayakers. One female was out of the water and at the ramp when rescuers arrived. They were able to get the other individual safely out of the water. Both victims had life jackets with them but they were not wearing them. After two near disasters in a short span of time, the Smith County Rescue Squad reminds everyone to wear life jackets at all times on the water.
