A portion of 127 North in Crossville was shut down Thursday (9/14/2023) after a suspicious device was found at a local business. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said a business owner discovered a potential explosive device on their premises Thursday morning. That prompted an immediate response from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. Assistance from various law enforcement and emergency response agencies, including the Crossville Police Department, Crossville Fire, Cumberland County Fire, Cumberland County Emergency Management Agency, and the Knoxville Bomb Squad were requested.
For the safety of the public, both the north and south bound lanes of 127 North were shut down around 1:40pm. Less than an hour later, the Crossville/Cumberland County Emergency Management Agency issued a press release stating the device was identified as a potential item of military ordnance and it was rendered safe and is in the possession of the Knoxville Bomb Squad. North Main Street in Crossville was scheduled to reopen shortly after.
Sheriff Casey Cox, along with the entire Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, expressed sincere gratitude to all the agencies for their swift response and assistance in handling this potentially dangerous situation.
