For 2020 only, the Tennessee General Assembly has approved two sales tax holiday weekends and the savings are bigger than ever before. During these weekends, certain goods may be purchased tax free. The first tax-free holiday weekend, referred to as the Back-to-School Weekend, begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 31 and ends Sunday, August 2 at 11:59 p.m. This year the price limits have doubled from $100 or less per item for general apparel and schools and art supplies to $200 or less per item. The price limits for televisions and computers have also doubled from $1,500 to $3,000. This includes computer parts, like keyboards and monitors when not sold with a CPU, storage media like flash drives and compact discs, laptops, tablets, smart phones and electronic readers. The next tax-free weekend is to boost restaurant sales. From Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 9, there will be no sales tax on retail food and drink at restaurants and limited service restaurants. Anyone can participate in the sales tax holiday weekends. Online goods priced under the thresholds are eligible. Items must be purchased for personal use, not for business or trade. The standard sales tax holiday will resume in 2021.
