Cumberland County Schools Implementing Extra Security Measures After Out-of-State Juvenile Makes Online Threats; Officials Say Threats Non-Credible

Jan 25, 2024 | 10:10 PM

Cumberland County Schools are implementing extra security measures after an out-of state-juvenile made online threats Thursday evening (1/25/24).  Director of Schools Billy Stepp said the juvenile suspect used a profile picture of a current Cumberland County student who was in no way involved with the threatening statements.  Director Stepp said the online threats made did not identify a specific school.  Out of an abundance of caution, law enforcement agencies have thoroughly investigated and deemed this threat to be non-credible.  Even though it is deemed not a credible threat, principals and school resource officers have been notified and extra security measures are being implemented.

Cumberland County Schools thanks the public for their posts of concern, reporting of the threats and immediate response to this situation.  Cumberland County Schools also thanks Homeland Security, Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department, and the Crossville Police Department for their diligent investigation in getting to the source of this threat.

Director Stepp said law enforcement have notified out-of-state agencies of the juvenile suspect’s threats for appropriate law enforcement action.
