The Cookeville City Police Department and Putnam County Sheriff’s office responded to a call Tuesday afternoon of a suspicious man with a gun near an elementary school.

According to a press release from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 3:15pm Tuesday (January 30, 2024), law enforcement first received information that a male was spotted in a tan suit near Raider Drive which is located near Avery Tracy Middle School. A short time later, law enforcement received a second call of an individual matching the description with a long gun near Capshaw Elementary School.

Authorities responded with a heavy presence in both areas and found no one fitting the description of the suspicious man. However, after investigating the call, law enforcement confirmed the person fitting that description was a known local attorney who reportedly had been involved in a vehicle accident. Police say the lawyer had been moving various items, including a long gun, from the vehicle involved in the accident to his wife’s vehicle.

Authorities made contact with the individual and confirmed he was no threat.

Sheriff Eddie Farris and Chief Evans thank the citizens for notifying law enforcement.
