Cumberland County Residents Losing Thousands to Computer Scams Involving Fake FBI Agents and a Bitcoin Machine

Several people in Cumberland County have lost thousands of dollars in computer scams recently that involve a fake FBI agent and a particular Bitcoin machine in Crossville.  One woman lost over $27,000 after a popup came across her computer screen that said she needed to contact Microsoft due to her bank information being leaked.  The victim ended up withdrawing $30,000 from her bank account and then being told exactly where to go in Crossville to put the money in a Bitcoin machine.  She had deposited $27,750 into the Bitcoin machine when she says it messed up.  She never got a receipt.  That’s when she finally contacted police who told her she will probably never see her money again.

A Fairfield Glade couple has fallen for a similar scam. This time the computer popup claimed to be from Windows_Defender_Security_Center.   They were told by the phony FBI agent to withdraw $20,000 from their bank accounts.  They did and then went to the same Bitcoin machine where the elderly woman lost her money. The couple did get a QR code from the Bitcoin machine, which they sent to the scammers.  They are now out $20,000…but they did get a message back from the scammers saying “thank you”.
