Roane County Sheriff’s Office Issues Scam Alert

The Roane County Sheriff’s Office is issuing a Scam Alert after a resident recently informed the department that a person contacted her by leaving a voicemail, and advised her that a lawsuit had been filed against her in Roane County court.  She was asked to call a “1-866” number for more details.  When she called the number, a person asked for her social security number to “verify her identity”, and would not identify the company they worked for.  The resident wisely did not provide any personal information to the caller, and hung up.  A search of the 1-866 number being used revealed that it was linked to healthcare scams and other nefarious activity.  The Roane County Sheriff’s Office and the court house DO NOT notify you via phone call, text, or voicemail regarding civil or criminal papers.  In the event that you receive any calls or text messages from someone claiming to represent the RCSO or Roane County court, please call the Roane County dispatch center 865-354-8045 or court clerk’s office 865-717-4228 to verify the authenticity before providing any information or answering any questions.  For persons living in other counties, call your local law enforcement should you receive a similar message.
