New laws coming July 1st in Tennessee

Jun 26, 2024 | 6:23 PM

With the start of July, many new laws will take effect in Tennessee.  Among the legislation set to become enforceable is a law that prohibits certain juvenile offenders from owning firearms until they turn 25. Starting July 1 prosecutors will be able to seek the death penalty in cases of aggravated rape of a child. Lawmakers also passed a new category in the anti-child pornography laws to include AI generated images. Anyone who provides transportation out of state for a minor to receive an abortion could be subject to prosecution. The Back the Blue Act changes an assault on an officer from a Class A misdemeanor to a Class E felony. Also moving from a misdemeanor to a felony charge will be the offense of making threats of mass violence on school property or activity. And starting next week, TWRA or Department of Agriculture officials must have a warrant or permission from the property owner in order to go on private property.
