A business on Highway 127 South reports the theft of two catalytic converters from two Chevrolet vans. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office estimates the loss at over $5,200. The report did not name any suspects.
With catalytic convert thefts on the rise in Tennessee and across the nation, State Senator Paul Bailey, of Sparta, and Representative John Gillespie, Of Memphis, have sponsored a bill that could deter thieves from stealing vehicle parts. The proposed bill would require individuals and businesses to keep records of any used car parts they buy or sell. The bill would also require businesses buying or selling unattached catalytic converters to register them with their local Police or Sheriff’s Office.
The legislation has been referred to the State Senate Transportation and Safety Committee.
