A federal lawsuit stemming from the alleged sexual harassment of ten employees of the Cumberland County Solid Waste Department by the former director Mike Harville has been filed in the Middle District of the Tennessee Court. The suit, filed by the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, alleges that Cumberland County failed to take reasonable steps to prevent the harassment by Harville by not having sufficient policies in place. The suit also charges that the county retaliated against one of the victims by changing her terms of employment. Federal prosecutors are seeking to award compensatory damages to the victims as well as requiring the county to develop and institute policies, practices and procedures to ensure a non-discriminatory workplace.
