On Thursday (4/21/2022), Rhea County Executive George Thacker pleaded guilty in federal court to wire fraud, a charge that carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence. The judge set Mr. Thacker’s sentencing date for September 22, 2022. Thacker is accused of using at least $650,000 COVID-19 relief loans for his own personal gain instead of for his business, for which the funds were intended. Court documents say Mr. Thacker used money from the loans to invest in cryptocurrency. George Thacker was reportedly released on a $30,000 bond and he has also withdrawn his name from consideration for the Rhea County Executive race this August.
