TN House Speaker Cameron Sexton and Lieutenant Governor Randy McNally were in Knoxville on Thursday for a ceremonial signing of the  “Truth In Sentencing” bill.  The law goes into effect on July 1, 2022 and will require mandatory 100% sentences for those convicted of violent crimes such as murder, vehicular homicide, especially aggravated kidnapping, carjacking, especially aggravated robbery and especially aggravated burglary.  Those convicted of crimes like aggravated assault will be required to serve at least 85% of their sentences.   On his Facebook page, Speaker Sexton said that he was honored to sign the bipartisan truth in sentencing legislation and that Thursday was a day that “Tennessee starts putting victims and their families before criminals.”
